Gylen Hightower is the Lord of Oldtown, Lord Paramount of the Reach, and Warden of the South. He has one son, Gerold Hightower.

History

Although the rose is the sigil of House Tyrell, it may better suit the Lord of Hightower, Lord Gylen, for he and his family have been a thorn in the side of their overlords for decades now. Reverently patriotic, nostalgic of times thousands years past, and dangerously strategic, Gylen has secretly vowed to bring ultimate honor and power back to the already powerful Southron House.

Being born a noble child in Oldtown does not breed humility. Oldtown has aged like a fine wine since it's founding in the Dawn Age. It's the second largest city in Westeros, a crucial port town on the southern end of the continent, and home of the Citadel, center of medical, natural, political, and magical study. It also sports a powerful army and several lower houses. However, there's one thing Oldtown does not have: Sovereignty.

Or, at least freedom over their ruling lords, the Tyrells. Gylen's father Old Garth made that very clear. Since the original Targaryen Kings the Hightowers have been underlings to the Tyrells, an opportunistic house that sprung up from servitude. The recent Hightowers subscribe very avidly to the opinion that the Tyrells, despite their proven skill in politics, are no true Noble Lords, especially over those who used to be kings.

Old Garth trained Gylen and brothers, Young Garth and Gavyn, from youth to be ready to rise up in the name of Oldtown and Hightower. While Garth and Gavyn were given focused training in swordplay and commanding respectively, Gylen became the political powerhouse of the children. All the boys still had their fair share of lessons in lording, but Old Garth wanted the four of them to be a formidable force when aged. All four of them were taught all about how the Tyrells were oppressing, oafish, sneaky, and power hungry. They were also told of the glory of the Hightowers. Old Garth also made the choice to marry a timid woman, Lady Beesbury. Although apparently in agreement with the Hightowers, she never had the tenacity to subdue Old Garth's fanatic lessons.

Sadly, Old Garth could not see his plans through in his lifetime. Old wounds from battles ages ago caught up with him, and dementia ensnared his mind. shortly after his 16th nameday Gylen visited his dying father one last time. He never forgot what his father told him on his deathbed. "Son, don't forget our words. 'We Will Light The Way.' When the strength of your siblings fails, I know you will not forget. Because it will be you, you will be the one to light the way for us."

Old Garth was not wrong. During the Greyjoy uprising, Gavyn overestimated his fighting ability and took an ax to the head. Young Garth in his shock and grief rushed to save his brother, but a throwing ax caught him in the spine. One Hightower returned dead and the other a cripple. All the maesters in the Citadel couldn't save Young Garth. It was a difficult decision for all of them, but the three remaining siblings came to the conclusion it was best for Young Garth to be put down. The Hightower family was broken, but hardly defeated.
