House Wyl of the Boneway is a house from Wyl in northern Dorne. It is one of the principal houses sworn to House Martell of Sunspear.
Located among the Red Mountains of Dorne, Wyl Castle guards the mouth of its namesake river as well as the Boneway. It overlooks a coastal town.
Wyl is accessible via a long winding path up the hill, littered with red rocks and dornish yews, and contains a network of tunnels and caverns beneath it.
House Wyl mans the watch towers throughout the Boneway leading to the Dorne's border.
Prior to the First Era
The Wyls have long fought against the lords of the Dornish Marches to the north.
Wylla of Wyl was a warrior-maid who fought besides Yoren Yronwood against King Durran the Young at the Battle by the Bloody Pool and was turned back.
During the First Dornish War, the Wyl of Wyl ambushed and defeated the forces of Lord Orys Baratheon as they attempted to assault the Boneway. Orys remained the Wyl's captive for years, until the Targaryens ransomed him and his men back in 7 AC for each man's weight in gold. When the captives were freed, however, the Wyl had their sword hands chopped off so they could not be used again against Dorne.
The most infamous act of the First Dornish War was committed by Lord Wyl, when he showed up at the wedding of Ser Jon Cafferen and Alys Oakheart, castrating the groom, having the bride be gang-raped by his men and sold into slavery, and slaying Lord Oakheart and most of the guests.
In 133 AC, Wyland Wyl slew Ser Steffon Connington in the Dornish Marches.
During the final stage of the conquest of Dorne, King Daeron I Targaryen was attacked and killed under the pretext of a peace banner and Prince Aemon Targaryen was imprisoned by the Wyls. Lord Wyl forced King Baelor I Targaryen to cross venomous snakes in order to free the Dragonknight
